Having been out of the technological loop, one that I rather successfully reported on, but never really understood, for a while, the few facts that I had sort of mastered have evaporated. I'm informed that MBaaS, Mobile Backend as a Service, is no longer an appropriate term.
Whatever you call it though, all of those services remain essential for a host of mobile application developers who have no idea how to construct their own back end, or who see the pointlessness of reinventing the wheel all of the time. To those intrepid geeks that can and do construct their own back ends, hats off to you! For those other developers, they at least must realize that they might well be building their houses upon a foundation of sand. Case in point: that of the MBaaS provider Parse. The page isn't working host: blog.parse.com Error code: net::ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE "Matthäus Krzykowski @matthausk Parse is the key trend on Twitter in SF right now and the dev channels I participate in are up in arms @ingridlunden 4:05 PM - Jan 28, 2016" It’s perhaps every startup’s dream to be acquired by a huge company and cash out with a big payday, building their mansion atop the ocean’s shores and locking out the rest of the world from their private domains. If so, the folks at Parse are all waiting for their top of the line Tesla orders and planning the décor of their new palatial estates. Great for them, so bad for their customers, locked in to Parse, they were first shuffled off to the buffalo of the dreaded behemoth Facebook. As if that wasn’t bad enough, finally, after a brief honeymoon, now the billionaires have tired of their troublesome charges and so have dumped them into the digital trash entirely. Just as the denizens of Stackmob were unceremoniously left holding that company’s now worthless code so its founders could reap the rewards of their customers’ hard work and enjoy the greener pastures of PayPal. The page isn't working host: www.stackmob.com Error code: net::ERR_TIMED_OUT Such is the way of the Internet jungle; the art of the deal will always benefit the few over the many. So be advised mobile software developers, the flowery promises of the startup will eventually give way to the fat pay check of the few founders. That’s OK, so informed you still need those types of services. Here’s my advice, culled from my favorite early twentieth century self help book, “The Power of Will”; As a general rule, every supposed reason for a change of action should be made a determining reason for not changing. That is to say, there are still many companies offering similar mobile backend services, by whatever the current moniker of choice; Internet of Things, API’s or what have you. Use them because the alternative is such a pain in the butt. Following are some of them that I found. Just remember that it could happen to you so be prepared by: · Backing up all of your code and content and · Always assume that your provider has a good chance of becoming a blurb on Facebook or a dot on Amazon. · Secure in your app or web page; continue to cultivate the same with a different provider of MBaaS so you will always have a plan b in place. Deployd seems like a cool solution as does ClearBlade or Kii. Yes, you may upgrade or downgrade plans at any time. Downgrades will be effective as of your next renewal date. Do I have to buy cloud capacity? No. If you’re looking only for front-end (client) development, and don’t have any need for push notifications, cloud storage, or any other cloud service, there’s no need to purchase cloud capacity. If I don’t buy cloud capacity now, can I come back and add it later? Of course! Do I need to have a seat in order to use cloud services? Nope! If you need only the cloud backend, you can buy just a cloud capacity plan and use with the front-end technology of your choice. Is there a limit to how many Indie seats I can have? Yes. The Indie plan delivers a single seat that cannot see or share work with other seats. It is a great choice for solo devs working on independent projects. How are renewals managed? Plans are renewed annually automatically. How does purchasing additional seats affect my renewal date? If you add additional Pro or Enterprise seats to your account, the new seat(s) will have the same renewal date as your original Pro or Enterprise plan. The cost of the new Pro or Enterprise seat(s) will be prorated accordingly. What forms of payment do you accept? We accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover. Is there a charge per target mobile platform/OS? No way! Every seat in every plan allows for development to all supported mobile platforms: iOS, Android and Windows. SmugMug has a long history of empowering people who love photography and who want to improve their craft, making them a perfect fit for Flickr and our creative community. Nothing will change immediately with regard to your Flickr account. The Flickr product and brand will live on under SmugMug ownership. You will still access the same Flickr you know and love at www.flickr.comand via our mobile apps. SmugMug and Flickr will remain separate brands and you will continue to have options for free and Pro Flickr accounts. Until we notify you otherwise, you will continue to use your current login credentials. As a result of the acquisition, Flickr accounts will be governed by SmugMug’s Terms of Service for Flickr and Privacy Policy for Flickr. The Terms of Service and Privacy Policy of Flickr’s current owner, Oath (formerly Yahoo), will not apply to the use of Flickr after the acquisition. You have until May 25, 2018 to review SmugMug’s Terms and Privacy Policy. If you do nothing in that time, your account will simply transition to SmugMug’s Terms of Service for Flickr and Privacy Policy for Flickr after the acquisition. If you do not consent to SmugMug’s Terms and Privacy Policy, you will need to delete your Flickr account through your Account Settings. If you want to preserve a copy of your photos, be sure to download them from your Camera Roll first. Read more detailed FAQs about this transition on the Flickr Blog. We’re happy that Flickr is your home for photography and we look forward to the next chapter in our adventure together as we join the SmugMug family. Thanks, The Flickr Team Summer '18 is here! Monitor the mayhem between them. As they fight it out amongst themselves, any cyber attacks upon your computer are gobbled up in the process. Step 3. Let them all live on your computer and resolutely deny them any upgrades or additional sign-ups. Yes it will impact your boot times. So will buying a fancy firewall that you pay and pay for.
